Hello community, and welcome to Mga Kapatid!
Whether you are a new student on campus, a returning member, an esteemed alum, or an ally from the community, we gladly welcome you to share in the celebration of our organization’s 46th anniversary. Mga Kapatid, translated from Tagalog as “My Brothers and Sisters," was established amidst the Civil Rights Movement in the fall of 1969 to provide a space on campus that supports and explores FilAm student interests and Pilipinx culture. MK’s lasting commitment to academic, cultural, political, and social support has not only fostered a legacy of well-rounded and thriving community members, but has established grounds for growth and success for FilAm students at the University of California, Davis.
College is a time for exploration. On a campus with over thirty-thousand people, we are exposed to a limitless amount of interests, people, and avenues for growth. We as college students have a world’s worth of possibilities within reach; the catch is that we have a limited amount of years to experience it.
As the 2015–2016 school year begins, a resounding question returns: “What does MK even do?” The reality of it is that MK has something to offer everyone. We are here for the singers, the traditional and modern dancers, the athletes, the dedicated students, and for those looking for a new friend. We are here for the FilAm identifying and our allies alike, and we are here for those still navigating their personal and cultural identities. We are here for those searching for a home and a family at UC Davis that will not only offer lasting friendships and memories, but will challenge and empower each other to reach greatness.
Among the FilAm organizations at UC Davis, I see MK as a crossroads. No matter what walk of life you come from, MK is a space for the FilAm community and allies to unite under one shared identity as students seeking to make the most out of their collegiate experiences. That is the beauty of this community: there are endless lessons to learn from the exchange of identities, philosophies, and experiences that one can gain here! The relationships I’ve made in these spaces have allowed me to expand upon who I am and appreciate the diversity of my neighbor; and going into my fourth year of college and presidency in MK, I feel that this community has always answered my yearning for growth throughout my college years.
We as Mga Kapatid have a little bit of something for everyone — all it takes is a little exploring.
On behalf of MK Board 2015-2016, and the many leaders and supporters of our community before us, I invite and encourage you to explore the many wonderful things that Mga Kapatid has to offer. You don’t have to be a particular major, year in school, and you don’t even have to identify as Filipinx or Asian American — we are simply a community who wants to grow and have fun while we’re at it. We would love if you’d join us in our journey!
